The Flagship Video Workshops:
Preparing Students for the Professional Level

The fall and winter 2021-22 Flagship Student Video Workshops provide instructors at Flagship and partner universities and centers with opportunities to discuss and expand their understanding of the linguistic and cultural development of Capstone students of Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Russian as they progress through ILR 2+, 3 and 3+ proficiency ranges with special attention to the development of target-language linguistic, cultural and professional presentational skills.

The Flagship Video Resource enables teachers to examine and discuss the specific communication and socio-pragmatic strategy selections offered by Flagship Capstone students, as well as their demonstrated levels of lexical and grammatical control and cultural referencing. The video recordings were produced on-location as part of each student’s end-of-semester formal presentation and/or media interview, and have been subsequently catalogued and archived in the Flagship Video Resource Site. A selection of the videos in each language has also been transcribed, translated, and coded. Workshop participants will evaluate video/speech materials in both language-general and language-specific sessions with a view toward sharing and strengthening instructional best practices and identifying areas of curricular need.
